5 great things to experience while visiting Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
1 Take a dip in the Mediterranean sea: In most towns there are signs in the harbor fronts directing those who are interested toward boats that can be rented by the hour. For about 18E you can head out into the open ocean for a few hours and in the summer time take the plunge.
2 Discover peace and quite in a convent : In the hills above Sorrento lies Oasi Madre della Pace, a convent whose Franciscan nuns welcome those looking for spiritual rejuvenation or simply a night of peaceful sleep. Usual cost is around 60E.
3 Relax like a movie star: In 1938 Great Garbo and her male companion attempted to secretly retire to the Hotel Villa Cimbrone for some “vaca” time. However, they were pestered by the press most of their stay. You’ll probably have a more successfully relaxing and paparazzi free experience.
4 Learn to cook Italian with a pro: It you’re a guest staying at Mama Agata’s home in Ravello, be sure to ask her about the finer points of Italian cooking. She was the Hollywood chef for many classic stars from Elizabeth Taylor to Humphrey Bogart and now teaches Italian cooking classes at her residence which has been in the family for 250 years.
5 Hang out on the cliffs like sirens do: In Homer’s Odyssey, sailors unable to ignore the beautiful songs of sirens who sat atop ocean bluffs, unknowingly steered their boats into rocky cliffs and soon met their fate. Apparently, local legend claims that the islands in which these sirens called home are located off of the Amalfi coast. In the town of Positano (named after these ancient creatures) you will enjoy beautiful views of the ocean and these eerie islands.
